No Nukes is Good Nukes
There's a drumbeat out there--no doubt started by the nuclear power industry--pushing the idea that nuclear power is a good alternative in these days of global warming, carbon caps, and so on. The fact is that nuclear power does contribute to carbon emissions, and they still haven't solved the age-old issue of storage of spent nuclear waste. Not to mention the safety issue--no plants have been built in ages, or will be built in the future, without the protection offered by the Price-Anderson Act--basically a taxpayer-financed insurance policy that protects the plant owners from financial liability in the event of a nuclear disaster, because traditional insurance companies won't touch that sort of policy because the danger is too great. Think about that for a minute. If nuke plants were as safe as the promoters like to claim, shouldn't the owners be willing o accept financial liability for accidents they insist would never happen anyway?
But the industry is using global warming as an excuse to try to fast-track the building of new nuclear plants.
NIRS, the Nuclear Information and Resource Service, is trying to put together an ad campaign to counter the massive PR buys the industry is making right now, trying to put the truth out there where people can see it. If you can help a little, they'd appreciate it. If you can help to the tune of $60, Bonnie Raitt would appreciate it enough to send you a free CD.
Or in their words:
Please
contribute as generously as you can at our secure site: https://secure.campagne-online.com/registrant/donate.aspx?EventID=2927&LangPref=en-CA
Just $5,000 in contributions will enable us to reach 1,000,000 more
people--that’s less than $5 from each of you; if you can give us $25, we’ll
be able to reach several million people by the end of the month!
And, if you’ve read this far, a special bonus! For every
contribution of $60 or more, Bonnie Raitt wants to offer her appreciation. We’ll send
you a free copy of her Souls Alike
CD as both her and our way of saying thank
you for helping us bring this critical issue to the attention of
more and more people.
There's also a statement you can sign onto, here. If you don't want Homer Simpson working in Mr. Burns's plant next to your house, get involved now. We need alternative energy that makes sense, and nuclear power isn't it.
